Bring the warm, welcoming fragrance of autumn and Christmas into your home with this simple DIY scented pine cone recipe.
Sweet Orange Essential Oil adds a bright, fresh citrus note, while Cinnamon Essential Oil brings a rich, warming spice. Together, they create a festive home fragrance that's perfect for displaying in decorative bowls, baskets or seasonal arrangements.
Ingredients
- 8-12 Collected Pine Cones
- 10 Drops Sweet Orange Essential Oil
- 5 Drops Cinnamon Essential Oil
- Optional Cinnamon Sticks & Dried Orange Slices for Decoration
Directions
Step 1: Clean the Pine Cones
Shake the collected pine cones and brush away any loose dirt, leaves or debris. Rinse under cool running water if necessary. Pine cones may close when wet but will gradually reopen as they dry.
Step 2: Dry and Open the Pine Cones
Preheat the oven to 100–120°C (90–100°C fan). Arrange the pine cones in a single layer on a lined baking tray and dry for approximately 45–90 minutes, checking regularly.
Pine cones contain natural resins, which can ignite. Never leave them unattended, and remove them immediately if they begin to smoke or smell scorched.
Allow the pine cones to cool completely before continuing.
Step 3: Add the Essential Oils
Place the cooled pine cones in a large sealable bag or airtight container. Add 10 drops of Sweet Orange Essential Oil and 5 drops of Cinnamon Essential Oil, distributing the drops across several pine cones.
Seal the container and gently turn it to distribute the fragrance.
Step 4: Allow the Fragrance to Develop
Leave the sealed pine cones for 24–48 hours to allow the fragrance to develop.
Arrange the scented pine cones in a decorative bowl or basket, adding dried orange slices and cinnamon sticks for a festive finishing touch.
