Why Do We Get Brain Freeze?

It's a familiar feeling. You're enjoying an ice cream on a hot summer's day or taking a big gulp of an icy drink when, suddenly, a sharp pain shoots across your forehead.

A few seconds later, it's gone.

Known as brain freeze (or, more scientifically, sphenopalatine ganglioneuralgia), this brief but intense headache is something many of us have experienced. Although it can be uncomfortable, it's usually harmless and disappears within a minute or two.

So why does something as enjoyable as an ice cream sometimes leave us clutching our heads?

What Causes Brain Freeze?

Brain freeze happens when something very cold touches the roof of your mouth or the back of your throat. The sudden drop in temperature causes blood vessels in this area to rapidly narrow and then widen again. This quick change stimulates nearby nerves, particularly the trigeminal nerve, which carries sensations from your face to your brain.

Your brain interprets these nerve signals as pain, even though the cold is actually in your mouth rather than your forehead.

This is known as referred pain, where discomfort is felt somewhere different from its original source.

Why Does It Hurt in Your Forehead?

It seems strange that eating an ice lolly can make your forehead ache, but it's all down to how the nervous system works.

The trigeminal nerve supplies sensation to several areas of the face, including the forehead. When it's stimulated by a sudden burst of cold, the brain can struggle to pinpoint exactly where the signal is coming from.

As a result, the pain is often felt across the forehead or behind the eyes, even though the trigger was in the roof of your mouth.

Does Everyone Get Brain Freeze?

No. Some people seem far more prone to brain freeze than others. Researchers aren't entirely sure why, but people who experience migraines may be more likely to develop brain freeze. Differences in nerve sensitivity and the way blood vessels respond to cold may also play a role.

Children often experience it because they're more likely to eat ice cream quickly, especially when the weather is warm. 

Can You Stop It Happening?

The simplest way to reduce the chances of brain freeze is to slow down. Taking smaller bites or sips gives your mouth more time to adjust to the cold temperature.

If brain freeze does strike, pressing your tongue against the roof of your mouth may help warm the area more quickly. Some people also find that sipping a warm drink or simply pausing for a few moments helps the pain disappear faster. Fortunately, brain freeze usually lasts no more than 30 to 60 seconds.

Why Cold Foods Trigger It More in Summer

Interestingly, brain freeze tends to happen more often during hot weather. When you're warm, it's tempting to eat ice cream or drink ice-cold beverages much more quickly. The greater the temperature difference between your mouth and the cold food, the more likely the nerves are to react.

That's why racing through a frozen drink after exercise or on a scorching day often ends with that familiar sharp headache.

A Quirky Reminder of How Clever the Body Is

Although brain freeze feels unpleasant, it's actually a sign that your nervous system is responding exactly as it should.

Your body is incredibly sensitive to sudden changes in temperature and has evolved to protect delicate tissues inside the mouth and head. The pain is short-lived because the temperature quickly returns to normal, allowing the nerves and blood vessels to settle down again.

Taking smaller bites and slowing down is often all it takes to avoid that sudden headache.
